Does physiotherapy hurt?

We always work within your comfort zone. Some techniques may cause mild temporary discomfort — particularly when addressing stiff or sensitive areas — but this should ease quickly. Our goal is to relieve pain, not cause it!

Questions about Osteopathy with Rebecca:

What is the difference between Physiotherapy and Osteopathy?

While both professions treat similar musculoskeletal conditions, the approach differs slightly. Our Osteopaths look at the body as a functional unit, focusing on how the skeleton, muscles, and ligaments work together to support health. Treatment often involves manual techniques to improve the body’s overall alignment and mobility, helping to stimulate its natural healing processes.

What conditions can Osteopathy help with?

Osteopathy is highly effective for a wide range of issues, including:

Lower back pain and sciatica

Neck pain and tension headaches

Jaw (TMJ) dysfunction

Hip, knee, and ankle injuries

Postural issues related to pregnancy or office-based work

What techniques does an Osteopath use?

Our Osteopath, Rebecca, uses a variety of hands-on methods tailored to your needs. This may include gentle stretching, joint mobilisations, soft tissue massage, and, where appropriate, rhythmic movements or joint manipulation. We also provide advice on posture and lifestyle to prevent symptoms from returning.

Do I have to undress for Osteopathy?

As Osteopathy involves looking at the alignment of the whole body, we may ask you to remove some clothing (down to your underwear) to perform a full assessment. However, your comfort is our priority—you are welcome to wear leggings, shorts, gym clothes etc if you prefer.

Questions about Pilates

Why should I do Pilates at a clinical clinic rather than a gym?

At Health Grove Clinic, our Pilates sessions are led by a registered Osteopath. This means your instructor has a deep clinical understanding of anatomy and injury. Unlike a general gym class, we can specifically adapt every movement to your medical history, ensuring the exercise is both safe and effective for your specific recovery.

I have a back injury—is Pilates safe for me?

Yes, in fact, Clinical Pilates is often recommended for back pain. Because our sessions are led by an Osteopath, we focus on "stabilisation," teaching you how to move in ways that protect your spine. We will assess your injury first to ensure that the exercises we choose support your rehabilitation rather than aggravating it.

What should I wear for a Pilates session?

Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that allows you to move freely (such as leggings or tracksuits). Pilates is typically performed in socks (preferably with grip) or bare feet.

Questions about Appointments:

How do I book an appointment?

You can easily book online through our website, call us on 0118 416 4100 or email us.

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist or osteopath?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with us.
However, if you’re using private health insurance, please check that your insurer has authorised your consultation and treatment prior to your appointment.

How long are the physiotherapy and osteopathy sessions?

Initial appointments are 45 minutes, and follow-up sessions are 30 minutes.
This allows time for reassessment, manual therapy and exercise progression.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

Your first physiotherapy or osteopathy session includes a detailed assessment to understand your pain, movement and goals. We’ll explain your diagnosis clearly, outline a tailored treatment plan, and usually start treatment straight away.

Will I get treatment on my first visit?

More than likely. Once your assessment is complete, we’ll begin treatment immediately — typically including hands-on therapy and specific exercises to get you moving comfortably.

How many physiotherapy or osteopathy sessions will I need?

It depends on the nature and severity of your condition. Some patients improve after a few sessions, while others benefit from a structured 4–8 week programme. Your therapist will outline a realistic recovery plan from the start.
